WARNING: Packrafting is an extremely dangerous activity. DO NOT attempt without serious preparation and research, it can cost you your life. Take a class, start with experienced rafters, and always check recent reports and conditions. Learn more in The Packraft Handbook.
Portage Creek is the river that connects Portage Lake to Turnagain Arm. It's a great setting to become more comfortable with rafting, while also admiring the beautiful views from the water. The river is large with relatively few hazards and there are multiple put-in/take-out options. Of course, rainfall and other conditions can quickly change any river, so always make sure to check recent reports on the Alaska kayak / packraft Facebook pages.
If you have only one car, limited rafts, and a larger group, the following is a fun and easy way to experience the Portage Lake area: One group rafts Portage Creek, while the other group hikes to Byron Glacier. The group hiking to the glacier can drop off the rafters first and then drive to the trailhead. After the hike, the hikers can meet the rafters at the midway take-out point. Then, you can switch if you want (without deflating the rafts!).The timing works out pretty well. We did this with our friends in August 2022 and they loved both the hike and the raft!
