Harp Mountain

Hiking - July 2022

Rating: **** (only because we can't give each hike 5 stars, definitely ***** for after-work short but steep hikes)

Distance: 3.6 miles

Vertical: 2.6k

Time: 2.5 hours

Difficulty: Hard (but short)

If you’re looking for a very steep and challenging but short after-work hike, Harp Mountain is one of the best in the Anchorage area. We recommend leaving it for a clear day if possible to make the beautiful 360 views of Chugach and further away mountains worth the steep climb.

The hike starts from the end of Hiland Road. The trail doesn’t waste any time and begins its steep ascent right away. Don’t expect it to flatten out any time soon, as you have around 2,600 feet to climb in under two miles. In terms of the conditions, the path itself is easy-to-follow, good, and relatively monotonous until the final scramble at the peak. You start past the tree line, so you get constant views of the surrounding area. There is a false summit around the time the scramble begins. From here on, the trail is on rocks until if you reach the top.

The views from the top -- and really from any point on the trail -- are epic on a clear day. As you climb, more and more of the surrounding area reveals itself and the beauty of it all distracts from the steep climb. We particularly enjoyed the views of the South Eagle River area which we were less familiar with at the time. It's views of mountains in every direction at the top. We were blessed with clear views of Denali and Foraker on the day we climbed Harp Mountain. Just awesome!

Overall, this is a super fun hike for when you want the cardio challenge, beautiful views, but don’t have all day.
